The Gallery: Blackpool Tower

The theme this week for the Sticky Fingers Gallery is let's all share a secret. Let's all paint a picture of the world we live in: The hidden bits, the bits you feel are special and people should know about. The bits people wouldn't necessarily see.

I knew exactly what I wanted to photograph. It is the view from my in-laws' front window. On a clear day you can see Blackpool Tower, twenty miles away.

I liked the idea of calling this photograph Blackpool Tower. Whenever I look out of this window I check if the Tower is visible. There are no kiss-me-quick hats or beeping amusement arcades, no hen parties or chips on the pavement. What you do see is some stunning Lancashire countryside.

  1. This is fantastic, brings back many memories. When we were little we used to go to Blackpool a lot and we had a competition in the car on the way there; first one to see the tower got a sweet.

  4. How cool! I would love to be able to say I had a view of a famous landmark out of my window!

  5. Our family used to do the same as CJs!First one to see the Tower.
Then my mum, whilst shampooing my hair at night, would sculpt my hair into a Blackpool Tower!

  6. As a child we would go to Ashurt's Beacon, near Wigan (Crystal Jigsaw will know it!) and look for Blackpool Tower. It's a lot more than 20 miles away, but on a clear day, you could see it. It's an amazing landmark, isn't it?

  8. I find it with Blackpool tower and also with other landmarks that I just can't not look at them! If I lived with that view then I'd never be able to take my eyes off the tower. I have memories of sitting in a cafe on the coast somewhere south of Blackpool (I have no idea where, but they had red squirrels in the car park). It was freezing cold and pouring with rain, I was about 11 and my sister and I sat staring into the grey nothingness trying to see Blackpool cos our Grandparents told us you could see it on a good day.

  9. CJ, Andy's family used to play that. Anyone who pointed to a pylon got laughed at! x

Rosie, Hmm, Paris or Blackpool? Paris or Blackpool?!

The Mad House, if you do, call for us on the way there!

Photo Puddle, I don't think they'll ever move!

Trish, the hair sculpting sounds mighty impressive!

  10. Working Mum, it is a fabulous landmark.

Livi, thank you. I just hope they don't build any more houses. The balance is just right now.

Jumbly Mummy, I'm the same. Every time we go to Andy's parents I look for the Tower!

  14. I say this every time (and it's been many many years since last time).... it's bigger than I expected (lol!). Blackpool is on my British Theme Park Grand Tour for next year - I'm already excited!

  15. That's a great take on a very familiar landmark. Used to love Blackpool as a kid. Now I'm "grown up" I'm not so keen on it. Good to see it from a respectable distance. Blackpool and respectable in the same paragraph? How did that happen?!

  16. As soon as I saw this title I had to click on it Sandy. My husband dragged me & the kids through the luminations one year as he use to go as a kid. I like your view of it better! I use to have a landmark - battersea power station - which I could see from our top bedroom in our house in London. I know what you mean about "checking" them throughout the day. Great post!

  17. How brilliant that you can see Blackpool tower from your window. I've never been to Blackpool and now I'm thinking perhaps we won't, perhaps we'll go somewhere with a view of it instead.

  18. Lovely picture Sandy - is it taken form somewhere near Chorley? I know there are a few places around where you can play spot the tower!

  21. I used to be able to see Blackpool Tower from my first floor office in Blackburn - probably about 24 miles as the crow flies - amazing :)

You should see where I've written about - also a favourite Lancashire place :D

  22. Susan, thank you, yes it's nothing like the Blackpool you see close up! x

Jane, thank you, yes it's totally different.

Karin, glad to inspire you ;-) If you do decide to go to Blackpool you must drop in for a coffee on the way!

Mrs W, ooh-er! As I said to Karin, we're not far from Blackpool, you'll have to tell us when you're in the area...

Him Up North, thank you. I like the fact that it's there if we want to go, but it's lovely to have a view of such an iconic landmark in the distance!

  23. Heather, thank you. I know exactly what you mean about checking on a landmark!

Barbara, there are some lovely parks and beaches in Lancashire. Blackpool is what it is, but if you want peace and quiet there are alternatives.

Kath, you're spot on, it is a village near Chorley!

Sian, it's not easy to spot, but if you look right in the middle of the photo you can see the tower in the distance.

New Mummy, I hadn't been until I met Andy. I like anywhere they sell ice cream!

  24. Nickie, Wow! I saw your post on Lytham. It is lovely there. We like to walk from the windmill to the point you showed. Sorry I didn't comment on your blog, I've been totally snowed under this week!

If I could escape, thank you :-)

    Geeky mummy, thank you :-)

    Chelle, thank you :-)
