Angels and Demons

I have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other.

The angel has a soft voice. If I talk at normal volume I tend not to hear her. I speak over her without even realising it. Sometimes I speak over her deliberately, because I can. If I'm shouting I even forget that she is there.

The devil has a loud and clear voice. Sometimes all I can hear is the devil. The devil is in my head. Slowly chipping away at my confidence. Nonchalantly picking away at my good intentions. Greedily eating away at my energy reserves. The devil is my mind's screensaver.

The devil says 'why did you think this was going to be easy?'.

The devil says 'go on, shout louder, your normal voice isn't effective'.

The devil says 'stick the television on, have a bit of peace and quiet'.

The devil says 'give them pizza again, they'll only throw anything else on the floor'.

The devil says 'pretend you can't hear them calling'.

The devil says 'you're not cut out for this, perhaps you should go back to work, let someone else look after them'.

The angel says 'you are a good mother'.
